Why Google Reviews?

If you’re new to the world of Google reviews, that’s great. It means that this article is for you. You may have heard of the phrase, “You are who Google says you are”. While that may seem a little over-the-top, at the time of this blog, Google accounts for approximately eighty-six percent of all searches.

One of the first questions I ask business owners when they start venturing into the world of Google Reviews is, “How many Google reviews do you have?” I am often surprised that most of them have absolutely no idea.

But why should you care?

Having a strong online reputation on Google is essential if you are wanting your future clients to find you. At the end of the day, you know Google reviews work, because you do it yourself.

Just think of the last time you were contemplating going out to dinner.

What was one of the first things you did? You probably googled the restaurant to see what the menu looked like, what the opening hours are. Maybe you also checked to see if it was BYO, the contact number for a reservation, and of course, how many Google reviews they had?

Ultimately, you want to know if the place you are planning to take your family or loved one to, is worth it.

Why Google Reviews?

Now, one of a number of things will probably happen while searching your restaurant.

  1. You see no reviews. This makes you question the business — how long have these guys been in business?  Maybe they’re not very good; after all, no one can be bothered to leave a review.

  1. You see a handful of reviews, (less than twenty) and not all of them are 5 stars. You are probably thinking, sometimes it’s good, sometimes not so good, and you wonder if it’s worth risking it considering the inconsistency in reviews. Maybe you should keep looking.

  1. You see a decent number of reviews – over 70. Okay, you tell yourself, I am interested; show me what you’ve got and let’s look at the menu, the décor/rooms, maybe even the cocktail menu. It looks like it could be a good night.

  1. You see over one hundred 5 star reviews. Everyone is raving about this place and I want to get in on that! Let’s get a group together and make an awesome night of it. No need to even look at the menu — this place is going to be great.

While this example highlights what a client might be thinking when researching a restaurant, they could just as easily be thinking similar things when researching your business. Research shows that clients will often shortlist 2-3 businesses they won’t do business with. If a business has no reviews, or very few reviews, it is unlikely to make even the shortlist.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that you’re okay with the status quo.

You may have fourteen 5 star reviews (which have come from a handful of clients and some family), but Google loves quality, quantity and recency. So, if the last review you received was more than a month ago, it is going to hurt your SEO (Search Engine Optimisation).  Which is basically the way Google determines how much traffic they send to your website.

Your business reputation won’t benefit much by resting on a handful of good reviews, so don’t be afraid to go out there and ask for them!

Interesting fact – did you know that 64% of clients will get your contact details and address from your Google my Business listing as opposed to 49% of clients that will click through to your website.

In summary, Google reviews are not only important to your reputation, they are vital to growing your business and getting leads. A strong online presence is no longer an option in our tech savvy culture —  and your online reputation can be one that either makes or breaks you.
